AI business process automation is the use of AI techniques -- machine learning, language models, agentic systems, intelligent document processing -- to execute or augment business processes. It is a subset of business process automation that adds inference, classification, and content generation to the toolkit.

At Axiant, AI business process automation runs through the same methodology as any other automation. Every candidate is scored against the Process Readiness framework and classified into one of four paths: Automate, Redesign, Instrument, or Preserve. AI is treated as a tool, not a strategy.

Traditional automation executes deterministic rules. The same input produces the same output every time. AI automation executes probabilistic inference. The same input may produce different outputs depending on context, training, and prompt design.

That difference matters at every stage of the methodology. AI requires more rigorous data integrity scoring, more explicit human-in-the-loop design, and significantly more observability than traditional automation. The methodology is the same. The application is sharper.

They are inappropriate for ambiguous workflows, processes that haven't been mapped, or organizations that can't yet observe what the agents are doing.

Agentic systems multiply the consequences of process debt. Deploying agents on a process you haven't documented is a faster way to compound the same chaos. We qualify agentic candidates with the same Process Readiness Score as any other automation, then design the boundaries before writing the agent.
